June 2021: the PFAS crisis erupts. It becomes clear that residents around the 3M plant in Zwijndrecht have been exposed to PFAS through heavy contamination in soil and water. Many people have many questions. To answer them, we developed a podcast series commissioned by the Flemish government.
We recorded 5 episodes, just over a year after the crisis broke out. A good time to take stock. In each episode, PFAS commissioner Karl Vrancken invited a specialist to explain a specific topic. Everything was talked together by host Francesca Vanthielen.
The PFAS crisis offered many angles for a podcast. In the end, we chose topics that proved relevant from current events and of interest to the general public. What exactly is PFAS? How do we clean up the pollution? And how do we eliminate PFAS from our society?
By making the right emphases, we were able to complement the information on the website, from info sessions and from press releases. The podcast thus became ideal for people looking for more in-depth content.
And there are a lot of them. We are currently at 2458 listens. More are added every day, too. What is striking: 40% of listeners are younger than 27. A target audience that is difficult to reach when it comes to these kinds of topics. As many as 75% listen to the episodes almost to the end. So PFAS remains a hot topic.
